Internal Medicine at Dick White Referrals is a compassionate and experienced Specialist team led by three Consultant Specialists Rob Foale, Simon Tappin and Jon Wray who are all Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons or European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine - recognised Specialists in Small Animal Internal Medicine.
The Consultants are supported by three ECVIM Residents, Nele Van Den Steen, Aida Gomez and Rachel Miller, who are all experienced veterinary surgeons who are undergoing Specialist training (similar to Registrars in a human hospital)
In the Internal Medicine Service we specialise in investigation of complex medical problems which because of our additional experience and expertise gained by training and specialising in one area, (coupled with access to sophisticated diagnostic equipment) we are well placed to diagnose and treat. The sort of problems that we regularly investigate include:
- Unexplained and persistent vomiting, diarrhoea or weight loss
- Hormonal (endocrine) problems such as diabetes mellitus, thyroid, adrenal and pituitary disorders
- Bleeding disorders
- Lung diseases including unexplained coughing or breathlessness
- Endoscopic investigations
- Cancer treatment
- Urinary problems
- Heritable illnesses
We understand that this can be a distressing and concerning time for owners when their pet has a problem the cause of which is usually obscure, and we try to reduce this as much as possible by being open, honest and communicative and by supporting owners in a professional manner. We discuss our findings with pet owners on a daily basis and will always update clients daily as to their pet's progress since most medical investigations will require a period of hospitalisation.
Our patients are cared for by a large team of dedicated nurses, intern veterinary surgeons and ward-staff ensuring their comfort, medical needs, and just as importantly their regular warm human interaction and compassionate re-assurance when they are away from home. We are very accustomed to the needs and idiosyncrasies of all shapes and sizes of cats and dogs and our Specialists and nurses have the space and facilities to account for the differing needs of feline and canine patients. We are all privileged to work in an environment where there is a large team of dedicated staff all motivated by the desire to help our patients in a compassionate environment and we hope that you can feel reassured that your pet is in the best possible hands, no matter how serious their condition.
"Just to thank you so much for all the care and attention you gave to Billy. We're so glad Ruth (our vet) sent us to Dick White Referrals. He was 10 at Christmas and we now have Billy back, chasing squirrels thro' the pinewoods and jumping creeks!"
