The Anaesthesia service is headed by Frederico Corletto.
The advances in diagnostic imaging, surgical and medical treatment of small animals mean that many procedures have to carried out in sedated or anaesthetised animals. Invasive surgeries, require also a careful planning of perioperative analgesia.
The service is run by Federico Corletto, with the invaluable help of Francesco Aprea, the anaesthesia resident, and 4 highly trained veterinary nurses. Our aim is to provide the highest standard of anaesthesia, analgesia and perioperative care. The availabilty of modern drugs and monitoring, and the refinement of the anaesthetic techniques used in small animals mean that it is possible to minimize pain and stress in pets undergoing surgery, and this is an important contributing factor to an early discharge and better outcome.
Every one of our patients is assessed individually and
an individual anaesthetic protocol is taylored to it, according to the procedure, the temperament, and the expected amount of pain experienced. The availability of modern physiological monitorng allows us to choose the most appropriate way to assess depht of anaesthesia and adequacy of analgesia during surgery, at the same time allowing to support cardiovascular and respiratory function, if necessary.
While most veterinary patients needs to be anaesthetised in order to perform surgery, we also use, whenever possible local anaesthetic and analgesic techniques, to reduce as much as possible the dose of anaesthetic, hence reducing the risk of affecting the normal functioning of the heart and the lungs.
We work with our collegues from other disciplines in order to provide the best patient care, especially offering advice regarding control of pain and management of critical patients.
