New Clinical Pathology Service at Dick White Referrals
Run by Elizabeth Villiers
Dick White Referrals is unique amongst private referral hospitals in having its own clinical pathology laboratory run by a consultant clinical pathologist and which is equipped with state of the art analytical equipment. This means high quality laboratory tests are available for our in-patients without delay. This is hugely beneficial, especially for our medical and neurology patients, as well as our intenstive care patients. The lab is run by Elizabeth Villiers who is a European Specialist in Veterinary Clinical Pathology and a Diplomate of both the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology and the Royal College of Pathologists. She is well known in the international veterinary clinical pathology community and is frequently an invited speaker at veterinary conferences and courses. Elizabeth is co-editor of the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Clinical Pathology.
This is a relatively small laboratory with three technicians, an associate dermatologist and an associate histopathologist as well as out clinical pathologist, which aims to give a personal service. The lab has high quality equipment including an Olympus biochemistry analyser and an Immulite analyser for hormone assays. We offer all the standard tests such as haematology and biochemistry profiles, hormone testing, microbiology as well as more specific tests including troponin I and therapeutic drug assays. In addition the lab performs coagulation tests, cross matching and cytology. Elizabeth Villiers is a well known cytologist, with particular expertise in haematological cancers and reads all the cytology samples. A unique feature of our lab is the services of dermatologist Rosario Cerundolo who examines all skin scrapes and trichograms and also is responsible for dermatophyte cultures. Rosario runs the dermatology referral service at Dick White Referrals. Histology is performed by our associate pathologists Tim Scase and Alistair Foote.
Our open plan recently refurbished lab has been designed with efficiency and rapid turn around in mind. The advantage of having a small team is that there is maximum interaction between staff members which leads to a good understanding of the whole picture in a clinical case. Our experienced technicians evaluate blood films and urine sediment preparations, but abnormalities and unusual findings are reviewed by our clinical pathologist, ensuring the very best quality of service. All clin path results are accompanied by interpretation and comments from Elizabeth.
Submission of samples from ‘external’ veterinary surgeons are very welcome. Please call or email if you would like a price list, submission forms and mailing stickers / envelopes. Alternatively submission forms and postage labels can be downloaded as PDF documents.
