Elizabeth ‘Butty’ Villiers

BVSc DipRCPath DipECVCP, CertVR, CertSAM MRCVS
European Specialist in Veterinary Clinical Pathology

Hi, I am Elizabeth Villiers, Head of Clinical Pathology. I run the lab which serves the speciality centre and also deal with samples from our referring veterinary practices. In the laboratory I examine the cytology samples, blood films and bone marrow samples and also interpret laboratory results. I also form part of the internal medicine service, with a particular interest in haematological diseases including anaemia, lymphoma and leukaemia.

I hold the European and Royal College Diplomas in Veterinary Clinical Pathology and worked for some years as a clinical pathologist for a private laboratory until 2000 when I returned to Cambridge University as Lecturer in Clinical Pathology. In this post I became increasingly interested in haematological diseases and developed a technique of flow cytometry used in the diagnosis of leukaemia and lymphoma. I am now an internationally recognised expert in the diagnosis of lymphoma and leukaemia.

I enjoy hands on teaching in haematology and cytology with veterinary undergraduates and have also presented many courses to veterinary practitioners. I present papers regularly to the annual conferences of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and Veterinary Clinical Pathology groups.

I have published numerous scientific papers and articles as well as chapters for text books; I am co-editor of the BSAVA Manual of Small Animal Clinical Pathology, which has been translated into Italian, Chinese and Korean!

I have one cat, Rosie, but sadly recently lost my much loved terrier Tarka so I well understand the anguish clients feel when their pets are unwell.
