It often involves an underlying dermatological cause, may cause neurological complications and can necessitate both medical and surgical management.

- Investigation of underlying dermatological diseases including where necessary allergy testing

- Management of underlying skin disease and particularly resistant bacterial infections.
Neurology:
- Neurological assessment of middle and inner ear complications (e.g. bacterial meningitis, vestibular syndrome, facial paralysis, Horner’s syndrome)
