Job Title: Anaesthesia Intern
Date Created: February 2020
Reports to: Head of Anaesthesia
Develop your career with DWR and be part of something special!
Founded in 2003 by Professor Dick White, DWR has grown rapidly to become the largest private veterinary referral hospital in the UK, currently with over 300 employees. DWR is a busy, purpose-built specialist referral-only small animal veterinary hospital conveniently located in Cambridgeshire between Newmarket, the home of horse racing and Cambridge, with its world-renowned University and amenities.
The hospital is fully equipped with the surgical, diagnostic and hospitalisation facilities commensurate with a flagship specialist veterinary hospital and also has an on-site reference laboratory with both in-house clinical pathology and diagnostic histopathology. As part of our on-going drive for excellence, we have a new building underway onsite that will double the size of our facilities and create a truly world-class hospital. We have modern anaesthesia workstations with comprehensive haemodynamic and ventilatory monitoring, a dedicated ultrasound machine to perform peripheral nerve blocks, non-invasive cardiac output monitoring and an intensive care unit.
We are looking for three Veterinary Surgeons interested in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia to join our team as an Anaesthesia Intern. DWR can offer you the ideal environment to refine your skills and acquire new ones, under the supervision of six ECVAA Diplomates, two Clinical Fellows and three Anaesthesia Residents.
The ideal candidate is a Veterinary Surgeon with a strong interest in Anaesthesia, who would like to eventually enroll in a residency program.
Caseloads include soft tissue surgery, minimally invasive and interventional procedures, orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery (spine and brain surgery), ophthalmic surgery and anaesthesia for advanced diagnostic procedures (MRI and CT, both on site).
The current Anaesthesia team consists of 8 Senior Anaesthetists (six of which are Dipl.ECVAA or ACVAA), three Residents, three Interns and three Anaesthesia Technicians/Nurses.
The successful candidate will join a team of 39 specialists in various disciplines, working together to offer the best possible quality of care to small animals. The Anaesthesia team holds weekly journal clubs, and case discussion/book reading.
The suitable candidate will spend two thirds of their time providing Anaesthesia for imaging procedures, where knowledge will be consolidated, and the remnant third of the time in theatre, where new skills will be acquired under the close supervision of a Senior Resident or a Diplomate. Interns are encouraged to undertake a research project, under the guidance of a Senior Clinician.
Anaesthesia Interns participate in a 1:4 out of hours on call rota, always directly supervised by a senior member of the team.
Candidates must be MRCVS, or eligible to register with the RCVS, and have the right to work in UK (UK or EU citizenship, or with valid UK working VISA for the duration of the internship). If not of English mother language, candidates must have good knowledge of spoken and written English, preferably certified by examination.
As you would expect from the UK’s largest private veterinary referral hospital, we offer an inspiring and friendly working environment together with career development opportunities and an attractive benefits package.
If you share our passion for delivering excellence, trust and care then we would love to hear from you.
