A German Shepherd battling a genetic variety of cancer is still ‘chasing the kids around’ thanks to her loving owners and the dedication of a Cambridgeshire animal hospital.
Brave seven-year-old Skyla is undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Linnaeus-owned DWR Veterinary Specialists with her owners expressing their thanks that ‘we’re lucky to have her with us for longer’.
The initial cancer diagnosis came as a complete shock to her owner Richard Davies from Norwich and his family.
Richard said: “We were in shock, disbelief and crushed, as Skyla was acting completely normal. She was still very playful, eating plenty and full of life. The diagnosis didn’t match the energy she had.”
Skyla had gone into remission thanks to the chemotherapy but Richard had been braced that the cancer might return and was determined to do all he could to continue to give his much-loved dog some extra quality time with her devoted family.
Richard added: “We were reassured that chemotherapy was absolutely worth trying and it would buy us more time with our beloved girl.
“It has done just that. Skyla is still doing well but sadly the cancer has returned. But she’s strong and well enough to have a few more treatments. She’s a little more tired these days but still finds plenty of energy to chase the kids around.
“My thanks also go to all at DWR Veterinary Specialists. Filipa and the rest of the team were amazing. They kept Skyla’s welfare constantly in mind and found alternatives if something was having an effect on her. It shows the professionalism of everyone at DWR.”
Filipa Lyseight, specialist in oncology at DWR Veterinary Specialists, said: “Skyla is a wonderful dog and we’re determined to do the best for her and her owners, as with all our patients.
