Neurology and Neurosurgery

The Neurology and Neurosurgery Service is led by Elena Scarpante (Consultant Neurologist), supported by Beatrice Carletti (Clinical Fellow), Oliver Marsh (Post Residency Clinician) and a team of Residents and Interns. Together with a large team of Veterinary Physiotherapists and dedicated Neurology Nurses.

We offer advanced diagnostic investigation and treatment of all neurological conditions including:

• Brain and spinal disorders
• Muscle and nerve disease
• Urinary and faecal dysfunction
• Vestibular syndrome and deafness
• Neuro-immunological conditions

Meningoencephalitis of unknown aetiology is increasingly
 the cause of neurological signs which can be extremely severe. Our on-site laboratory enables us to analyse CSF samples immediately, ensuring rapid diagnosis and early treatment. In collaboration with European and American institutions, we are pioneering studies into this condition.

We are one of a very small number of veterinary facilities to have an on-site Cavitronic Ultrasonic Surgical Aspirator (CUSA) which uses ultrasonic frequencies to fragment tissue while lavaging and aspirating material from the surgical site. This advanced technology is used for reduction and removal of a wide range of tumours, including those which may previously have been considered non-resectable. The enhanced accuracy reduces the possibility of damage to surrounding parenchymal and vascular structures.

Many medical and surgical patients require intensive care, particularly after
brain and cervical spinal surgery
or in cases of severe neurological diseases such as polyradiculoneuritis, botulism, tetanus, myasthenia gravis and neurotoxicological syndromes. Our combination of expertise, close collaboration with the Anaesthesia Team, advanced equipment and superb intensive care facilities provides the best possible environment for care of these vulnerable patients. Rehabilitation is aided greatly by the support of our Physiotherapy Service.
